People Mover Temporarily Relocates for 6th Avenue Redevelopment Project

July 7, 2020 - Anchorage Community Development Authority’s (ACDA) last tenant at the transit center, People Mover, will temporarily relocate their operations and customer service office on August 24, 2020 to make way for construction of ACDA’s 6th Avenue mixed-use redevelopment project.

“The closure of the downtown transit center is a significant step toward the redevelopment of the building that is almost 40 years old and has been a constant source of health and safety problems for downtown,” said Andrew Halcro, Executive Director of ACDA.

A temporary transit hub will be established three blocks to the east of the transit center on 6th Avenue between D Street and E Street in front of the JCPenny parking garage and former Nordstrom building. Bus trips will start and end there while construction is underway at the transit center. The Customer Service office will temporarily relocate to 517 West Seventh Avenue, Suite 200.

“We are committed to continue to provide bus service to downtown while construction is underway at the transit center. The temporary transit hub location allows the municipality to deliver this service with minimal interruption to those who rely on People Mover to get to their homes, jobs, schools, and shopping trips,” said Jamie Acton, Director of the Public Transportation Department.

The redevelopment project construction will take approximately 18 months to complete, at which time People Mover will return to the building.

The People Mover relocation will coincide with the addition of a new transit route that will provide service to West Anchorage, the Loussac Library, and Old Seward Highway.
